discovery of gamma - ray emission from a relativistic jet in the narrow - line Seyfert 1 quasar

چکیده
We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy gamma-ray emission from the peculiar quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.585± 0.001). Contrary to the expectations, the optical spectrum of this quasar shows only narrow lines [FWHM(Hβ) ∼ 1500 km/s] and the typical characteristics of narrow-line Seyfert 1 type galaxies. However, the strong radio emission and the flat spectrum suggest the presence of a relativistic jet, which can now be confirmed by the detection of MeV-GeV photons. PMN J0948+0022 is therefore the first radio-loud narrowline Seyfert 1 quasar to be detected at gamma-rays and the third type of γ−ray emitting AGN, after blazars and radiogalaxies.

Modeling the Broad-Band Emission from the Gamma-Ray Emitting Narrow-Line Seyfert-1 Galaxies 1H 0323+342 and B2 0954+25A
Prior to the Fermi-LAT era, only two classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) were thought to harbor relativistic jets that radiate up to gamma-ray energies: blazars and radio galaxies. The detection of variable gamma-ray emission from Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies has put them on the spotlight as a new class of gamma-ray emitting AGN. In this respect, gamma-ray emitting NLSy1s seem to ...
متن کاملRelativistic jets in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. New discoveries and open questions
Before the launch of the Fermi satellite only two classes of AGNs were known to produce relativistic jets and thus emit up to the γ-ray energy range: blazars and radio galaxies, both hosted in giant elliptical galaxies. The first four years of observations by the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi confirmed that these two are the most numerous classes of identified sources in the extragalactic...
متن کاملA Rapid X-ray Flare in the Radio-loud Narrow Line Quasar Pks 0558-504
We report the detection of a very short time scale flare in the radio-loud narrow line quasars PKS 0558-504 by using ASCA. The X-ray count rates increased and decreased by a factor of two in 33 minutes, and possibly by 40% in as short as two minutes during this flare, confirming that such flare event does occur in this object with imaging detectors. The implied largest rate of change in luminos...

We report the discovery by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope of high-energy γ−ray emission from the peculiar quasar PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.5846). The optical spectrum of this object exhibits rather narrow Hβ (FWHM(Hβ)∼ 1500 km s), weak forbidden lines and is therefore classified as a narrow-line type I quasar. This class of objects is thought to have rela...
متن کاملROSAT HRI monitoring of extreme X - ray variability in the narrow - line quasar PHL 1092
We report results from an 18-day ROSAT HRI monitoring campaign on the ultrasoft Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) class quasar PHL 1092. This luminous, radio-quiet quasar showed strong X-ray variability in a short ROSAT PSPC observation, and ROSAT HRI monitoring of the similar object IRAS 13224–3809 revealed extreme variability on intermediate timescales. We wanted to determine whether remarkable X-...
